Romania is a full European Union Member since 1 January 2007. Romania signed its Europe Agreement in 1993 and submitted its official application for membership in the European Union on 22 June 1995. The Brussels European Council of 17 December 2004 confirmed the conclusion of accession, the date of accession, 1 January 2007, was set at the Thessaloniki Summit in 2003 and confirmed in Brussels on 18 June 2004.
Romania is also the Schengen area member with air and water borders, and further discussions are to be done in 2024 for land borders. However, Romanian citizens are free to travel and work anywhere in the European Union without visas or any kind of restrictions. The full land Schengen area joining will affect mainly the trade relations and the free transportation of goods.
